Lucca Municipality

Lucca is an Italian municipality which is the provincial capital of the homonymous tuscan province.

The city is located in the northwest part of Tuscany, along the left bank of the Serchio river, 19m. above the sea level, in a large valley, at the beginning of the Garfagnana. It is 15km from Pisa (North-Est). The Monte Pisano separates the two cities.

Lucca counts 84.323 inhabitants and the area sizes 185,5 sq.m.

The city is for years involved in numerous actions finalised to support the sustainable development of the local territory.

The Municipality subscribed, amongst other, to the Aalborg Commitments and to the Italian Local Agenda 21 Association.

In order to respect the commitments subscribed, numerous actions regarding various aspects of sustainable development were implemented, amongst which we can mention the environmental protection, sustainable mobility, optimized waste management, urban planning, natural resources management, promotion of renewable energies and energy efficiency, protection of biodiversity, etc.

For instance, the Municipality realised concrete actions for the benefit of a sustainable urban logistics system, implementing a series of integrated mobility measures, amongst which the realisation of an eco-friendly urban distribution centre operating for the distribution of goods in the city. This centre is the cornerstone around which other policies and rules operate to support the sustainable mobility of the urban centre.

The Municipality takes part to numerous regional, national and European collaboration projects.

In particular, in the LIFE programme, the Municipality guided the LIFE Environment Project (“CEDM - Centro Ecologico Distribuzione Merci - Eco-Friendly City Freight Distribution” - n. LIFE05 ENV/IT/000870) which the European Commission, in 2008, awarded as one of the most successful LIFE projects, and the “Serial Wellfir - Serchio RIver alimented WELL-Fields” project (LIFE04 ENV/IT/000503), dealing with the management of water resources.
